Stay safe at conference
Attending a conference alone in a city can be an enriching experience, offering opportunities for networking and learning. However, it’s crucial to prioritise your personal safety throughout your stay.
Here are some detailed strategies to help ensure your safety while enjoying the event:
- Research the Venue and Surroundings: Before you arrive, please familiarise yourself with the conference venue and the surrounding area. Please look up information on restaurants, transportation options, and nearby attractions. Understanding the area's layout can help you navigate confidently.
- Plan Your Transportation: Decide how you will travel to and from the conference and your accommodations. Use reputable transportation services, such as well-reviewed taxis or rideshare apps. If you’re using public transportation, familiarise yourself with the routes and schedules in advance.
- Please check in with the Conference Team. They can help with transportation options, including arranging a taxi. They may also help you connect with other attendees or organise group commutes between venues, enhancing both safety and networking opportunities.
- Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Remain vigilant as you move around the city. Be mindful of your personal items and avoid distractions, such as excessive phone use, which could diminish your awareness of your environment. Stay alert to the people and activities around you, especially in crowded areas.
- Keep Personal Items Secure: Use bags that can be securely closed and keep valuables, such as wallets and electronics, close to your body. Consider using anti-theft backpacks or bags that are designed to deter pickpockets.
- Avoid Vulnerable Situations: Do not walk alone in poorly lit or deserted areas, especially after dark. If possible, travel in groups with other conference attendees, as there is safety in numbers. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, don’t hesitate to exit or call for help.
- Share Your Itinerary: Let a trusted friend or family member know your plans, including where you will be staying, conference sessions you’ll attend, and activities you have planned. Regularly check in with them, especially if there are any significant changes or delays.
- Know Local Emergency Contacts: The conference app and webpage will provide local emergency contact numbers and the location of the nearest hospitals or urgent care facilities. Familiarise yourself with this information before the conference begins. Save essential contacts in your phone, including local law enforcement and your accommodations.
- Engage with Fellow Attendees: Take the opportunity to network and socialise with other conference participants. This can provide a sense of community and shared experience, making you feel less isolated and more secure.
- Trust Your Instincts: Always trust your gut feelings. If something feels off or makes you uneasy, act on those feelings. It’s better to be cautious than to put yourself in a potentially dangerous situation.
- Stay Connected: Keep your phone charged and consider carrying a portable charger. Regularly check in with friends and family via messaging apps or social media, letting them know you are safe and keeping them updated on your activities.
By following these guidelines, you can enhance your personal safety while enjoying the invaluable experiences that conferences offer. Please remember, taking precautions is a proactive step toward making a rewarding and secure trip.
