NIHR Pre Doctoral Award Partnership
NIHR Predoctoral Award (PreDA)
Cohort 2 Award Launch
NIHR's mission is to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research. By investing in academic career pathways for health and care researchers from all professional backgrounds, we are building the capacity and capabilities needed to tackle the complex health and care challenges of the future. Through partnering with charities, we can maximise the value of research to patients and the economy.
The NIHR is partnering with a number of charitable organisations to offer jointly funded NIHR Charity Partnership Awards through the PreDA Cohort 2 competition. Partnership Awards offer award holders the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of an NIHR training award (including NIHR Academy membership) as well as the additional benefits that funding through the charity can offer.
Key messages:
- All NIHR awards provide the opportunity to undertake or prepare for exciting and impactful research that will underpin the researcher’s development as an independent future leader
- The PreDA scheme supports early career researchers to become competitive applicants for a doctoral level research training award, and is available to:

- applicants seeking to develop as a methodologist in one of the applicable methodological areas.
- The Predoctoral Award provides funding for:
- your full salary, including the employer’s contribution to National Insurance and superannuation
- time to prepare your application for a PhD award
- if you are an aspiring methodologist, you may also use the award to help develop a methodology career in roles relevant to health and social care research
- Either a full masters fees at the UK rate or £5000 per full-time year for a tailored masters-level training
- £1000 for working with people and communities, previously known as patient and public involvement, and research inclusion
- £1000 supervisory fees
- £1000 conference fees and associated travel and subsistence
- NIHR Charity Partnership Awards offer researchers the opportunity to be part of an active and supportive community, drawing on the enormous benefits and opportunities of cross-sector working including valuable input from patient groups
