The Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre welcomes a new Chair.
The Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre (ICNARC) is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Robert Sneyd, Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Plymouth, as Chair of its Board of Management (Trustees).
ICNARC is a scientific, not-for-profit organisation that works to help improve the quality of critical care through audit, research and education conducted with, and in the interests of, patients and those who care for them.
Professor Sneyd graduated from Cambridge University in 1981 and continued his medical training in London, Manchester and the USA. Half way through, he undertook a research degree and then spent a period working full-time in the pharmaceutical industry before returning to work in the NHS. Until this year, he has been serving as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Plymouth in the southwest of the UK. During this time, he has led them to success both in league tables and educational reputation.
He has served as Vice-President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, Vice-President of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland and as a Director of the European Society of Anaesthesiology.
Professor Sneyd's research interests focus on drugs, pharmacology and pharmacokinetics. Having worked in the pharmaceutical industry, he has a special interest in drug development, especially in intravenous anaesthesia. In 2013, he Chaired and led the “Safe Sedation Practice for Healthcare Procedures Standards and Guidance” for the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.
Professor Sneyd said: “I am honoured to be taking up the role of Chair of the Board of Management at an exciting time for ICNARC. I am very much looking forward to supporting its future development and leading on the implementation of its new, five-year strategy - as it enters its 25th year of working to improve the care and outcomes for the critically ill.”
Sneyd takes over from Bob Nicholls, who retires at the end of 2018 after chairing the Board for the last three years.

Bob has been strongly committed to supporting ICNARC in developing our ambitious, strategic plans for the future and we thank him wholeheartedly for his invaluable contributions. We are very excited to have Rob join us to support this next phase for ICNARC.”
